Temagami First Nation | Housing

This project offered several site-specific challenges including remediation of an existing contaminated site, integrating existing community infrastructure, creating an overall waterfront masterplan, including amenities such as communal fire pits, amphitheater, waterfront marina, pedestrian walkways, gardens, and incorporating several accessibility requirements. In addition to these challenges, the project also presented several requirements unique to First Nation Affordable Housing, including accommodating several community elder residents with limited mobility, providing spaces to practice Indigenous activities on site and locating and orienting the building and related site features in keeping with First Nation cultural traditions. LEA’s final design for this housing project provides exterior and interior spaces which foster independence, autonomy, accountability of territory and community leadership, while successfully linking the proposed site with the newly constructed Temagami First Nation Multi-Use Facility which offers a range of social and cultural support programs to community residents.
